Inspired by a comic strip about a frisky young lady-fox, Janáček's forest opera The Cunning Little Vixen is a heart-warming humanist hymn to nature's eternal cycle of life and death. Marking John McCabe's 70th birthday, the programme includes his Horn Concerto, which combines urban jazz with the sounds of the equatorial rainforests. The major musical memento of Dvořák's directorship of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, his Ninth Symphony was partly inspired by the scene of Minnehaha's forest funeral in Longfellow's Hiawatha but also exudes nostalgia for his - and the Vixen's - native Bohemian woods and fields.
