Proms Out+About took to the streets of London on 25 June 2009 9am-9pm, with great success. Members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra played to passers-by in stations, libraries, schools and hospitals across the city, bringing free live classical music to new audiences and making music with communities across London with workshops and interactive events for children.

Proms Out+About has been taking the Proms to an eclectic range of venues for many years. The 2009 event was a great success, and many new audiences across London were treated to a taste of what's in store at the BBC Proms this summer.

The day ended with a huge free one-off concert by the full 90-strong BBC Symphony Orchestra in Westfield London Shopping Centre. Late-night shoppers, after-work crowds and families were drawn in to the instantly recognisable sounds of theme music from Mary Poppins and Harry Potter and Handel's Dead March. A new work by R Rodney Bennet, Chelsea Reach, had its premier, and secondary school children joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra onstage to play, appropriately, Britten's Young Person's Guide to The Orchestra and a finale of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, amongst many others.
