Indian Voices Day: Sunday 16 August


This year, the BBC Proms celebrates Indian Voices. In a day featuring music ranging from traditional khyal singing to a shoulder-shaking Bollywood climax, there's the chance to explore the world of Indian music further with Bollywood Proms Family Orchestra and Chorus sessions culminating in performances at Indian Voices in the Park - a free mini-mela in Kensington Gardens with live music and Bollywood dancing!

Sign up to join members of the Bollywood Brass and play in the Proms Bollywood Family Orchestra and Chorus, alternatively just turn up on the day to learn how to dance Bollywood style.

Our Proms Indian Voices day begins with a concert of north Indian classical khyal singing, featuring Pandit Ram Narayan, the greatest living sarangi (short-necked fiddle) player; Manjiri Asnare Kelkar, the rising star of the Jaipur-Gwalior khyal school; the two Mishra brothers, the foremost exponents of the virtuoso Varanasi vocal style; and Asima, an iconoclastic, boundary-breaking young vocal ensemble from Kerala.

There will be one interval


Indian Voices in the Park: 2.00pm - 6.00pm

Location: Kensington Gardens, Albert Memorial West Lawn

Free performances of folk music and dance from Rajasthan (including ghoomer dance)
and Gujarat (including ras and garba dances). Also incorporating:

2.00pm Proms Family Orchestra and Chorus
Participate with members of the Bollywood Brass Band in the Proms Bollywood Family Orchestra and Chorus and learn how to dance Bollywood style!

5.45pm Proms Literary Festival (Royal College of Music)
Prize-winning author Jamila Gavin and ‘Binglish' theatre director Jatinder Verma join Rana Mitter to explore great Bollywood stories. Edited version broadcast on Radio 3 during tonight's interval.

Following the afternoon of free music-making and dance at Indian Voices in the Park, Kensington Gardens, our Proms Indian Voices celebration culminates in an all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood extravaganza fronted by the popular Indian TV talent show host and award-winning singer Shaan and his band, plus the Bollywood moves of Honey's Dance Academy.
