Fantastic Prom this. After the Adams, we heard a beautiful account of Mozart's 20th piano concerto from Shai Wosner. The slow movement, especially, was from Heaven. It was like listening into a private musical event; so totally absorbed was Wosner, and us, the audience. Thoughtful accompaniment from orchestra and conductor.

Then the outrageous Sinfonia Domestica by Richard Strauss. I have long had a soft spot for this piece. A day in the life of the Strauss family. From bathing the baby, to lullabies, to making love, to arguments.... only Strauss would have dared do this.

And the performance was terrific. All departments of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra were on top form, but I must single out the woodwinds, and especially the glorious oboe d'amore playing. Runnicles was fully in control of what can be a very difficult piece to bring off, bringing humour and warmth. I have many recordings of this piece, some by the most world-famous of names, and I have never heard as fine a performance as this.

      An outstanding night.

What a fantastic concert, i was blown away! I'm not all that fond of Adams, but that worked as an excellent starter. The Mozart was far from textbook, but i really enjoyed Wosner's mischievous attitude - a tremendously engaging interpretation i thought.

And Strauss' Sinfonia Domestica - utterly magnificent on every count! What a joyous piece and what a stunning account of it. I think it was Donald Runnicles' first concert as new Principal Conductor of the BBCSSO, so they probably spent a lot of time preparing it, and really gave it their all - it certainly sounded like it to me, and i mean this in the best possible sense, it was absolutely superb. If they manage that sort of playing every time... well, i might just have to move up north of the border!

Great stuff, loved every minute - very many thanks!
