1. The competition is open to UK residents only. Overseas entries will not be considered. Entrants will be judged in two categories, the first for those aged between 12 and 16 at the closing date, and the second for 17 to 18 year olds. Entrants under 16 should provide signed consent from a parent or guardian.
2. Entrants must provide the BBC with names and addresses and other contact details. The BBC will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition, and will not publish them or provide them to anyone without permission. 3. The deadline for receiving entries is Friday 29 May 2009.
4. Entrants may enter only one composition. Entries must be sent by post and must include two musical scores of the composition, along with two recordings on CD and an entry form to: Young Composers' Competition, 14 Lakeside, PO BOX 105, Rochester, Kent ME2 4BE. Entries cannot be returned.
5. Entrants supplying recordings/scores agree to grant the BBC an exclusive licence to use such entries in all media for all the purposes of the competition including without limitation transmission on radio and streaming on the internet and making copies or new recordings, if required. In connection with BBC's planned usage of the entries, entrants must ensure that: a) works submitted are original b) any other musicians performing have agreed to it being used for all purposes of the competition - but please note professional musicians' performances on entries broadcast/streamed on the internet will be dealt with in accordance with the BBC's agreements with the Musicians' Union or under such other arrangements as normally apply.
6. Winning entrants receiving commissions from the BBC agree to grant the BBC an exclusive licence to use such commissioned pieces in all media for all the purposes of the competition including without limitation transmission on radio and streaming on the internet and making copies or new recordings, if required. In connection with BBC's planned usage of the commissions, entrants must ensure that works submitted are original. Professional musicians' performances on commissions broadcast/streamed on the internet will be dealt with in accordance with the BBC's agreements with the Musicians' Union or under such other arrangements as normally apply.
7. Entrants must warrant that their entries are original, entirely their own work and do not infringe copyright or other third party rights.
8. The competition is not open to employees of, or the close relatives of employees of Guardian Newspapers Limited, or of the BBC, their agencies or anyone else connected with the creation or administration of the Competition.
9. There will be up to three winners and up to five highly commended entrants in each category. Winners will have their winning composition performed by professional musicians and broadcast on Radio (subject to technical and operational possibility). They will also receive a commission from the BBC Proms and attend workshop days with the Proms team and professional composers. Highly commended entrants will also be able to attend workshop days with competition winners.
10. The BBC's decision as to who the winners will be is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
11. Winners will be contacted personally by email, telephone or by mail. If a winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made the BBC reserves the right to offer the prize to a highly commended entrant.
12. The prize must be taken as stated and cannot be deferred. There will be no cash alternatives.
13. The BBC does not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries due to the postal service. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.
14. Entrants must supply full details as required above, and comply with all rules to be eligible for the prize. No responsibility is accepted for ineligible entries or entries made fraudulently.
15. The BBC and the Guardian reserve the right to cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.
16. Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules and to agree to be bound by them when entering this competition. Winning entrants will be expected to take part in post-competition publicity if required.
17. These rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
18. This competition is administered by the BBC in association with the Guardian.
