Prom 17: World Music Celebration

Mayra Andrade

World Music Celebration - the winners of the Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Now in its seventh year, the Radio 3 Awards for World Music has established itself as a major event in the international music calendar, and this year the Proms welcomes its winners for the first time.

The 11 categories of the Awards embrace music reflecting a kaleidoscopic range of cultural traditions from around the world - so we have Cape Verdean songs from Mayra Andrade (Newcomer); desert blues from Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara (Culture Crossing); the sounds of the Malian ngoni (a kind of lute) from Bassekou Kouyate (Africa and Album of the Year); Chinese electronica from Sa Dingding (Asia/Pacific); and flamenco fusion from Son de la Frontera (Europe).

In collaboration with Serious

Mayra Andrade (Cape Verde)
Juldeh Camara (Gambia) & Justin Adams (UK)
Bassekou Kouyate (Mali)
Sa Dingding (China)
Son de la Frontera (Spain)

Steve Evans
A glorious evening of music and singing. I was left feeling how much overlap there is between music from different parts of the world, yet pleased there is still such variety. It was a pity that quite a few of the audience had to leave before the end. Still, it left space for people to dance in the arena and the boxes!
