Prom 3: NKQ - Nigel Kennedy Quintet

Kennedy Quintet

'People can say I'm a classical violinist if they want to, but I've always viewed myself as a musician who plays music and not just a certain part of it.'

Tonight's second Prom offers an opportunity to judge Nigel Kennedy's comment for yourself.

For the past few years Kennedy has been living in Poland, exploring the country's rich musical heritage - and he has also been teaming up with some of Poland's finest jazz musicians, the fruits of which you can hear tonight.

  • Nigel Kennedy violin
  • Tomasz Grzegorski saxophone
  • Piotr Wyleżol piano
  • Adam Kowalewski double bass
  • Paweł Dobrowolski percussion
  • with Xantone Blacq singer
    There will be no interval

I was looking forward to this after a searing Elgar Violin Concerto earlier in the evening. However, it was truly awful - so loud and cacophonic, and the music very pedestrian rock. It sounded like Simon House era Hawkwind (only without any of the redeeming features).

Nigel Rob
The 'jazz' was so awful and amateurish we had to turn it off - stick to your day job Nigel.

Emoly
Fantastic ... has music in the blood.

L Percival
We watched with fascination and very great pleasure Nigel Kennedy play Elgar at the Proms ...

I didn't get to watch Nigel Kennedy's Quintet on 16 July but I did last night (26 July) which was absolutely breath-taking. So professional, and I liked their music very much. It was good to see Nigel Kennedy so happy and relaxed. The band played superbly together and I'd now like to see if the concert was recorded on CD to buy.

Jonathan Bush
A complete let down, this was little more than the Kennedy show. His over the top platform style came between me and the music. It left me cold.

Susan S Jenkinson
Absolutely blew me away! Fantastic, fabulous.

P. Blazier
Nigel Kennedy is a great violin player but he is not a composer, his jazz music was very ordinary indeed - I can understand that he may feel the need to branch in to other musical fields but it would be better if he played others compositions. Prom 3 was very self indulgent.
