Prom 25: Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra

Julia Fischer (credit: Kasskara)

Rustic dances provide energetic inspiration for the two large works this evening. Brahms's big-boned and technically demanding Violin Concerto ends with a wonderfully infectious peasant dance, while the third movement of Dvořák's Sixth employs the furiant with its thrilling cross-rhythms.

Julia Fischer is certainly among the ranks of today's most lavishly talented young violinists, and in Yakov Kreizberg she has a musical partner with whom she has made some outstanding recordings.

To open the concert, the Netherlands Philharmonic brings the Straussian Cyrano de Bergerac overture by its compatriot Johan Wagenaar.

  • Wagenaar Overture - Cyrano de Bergerac (14 mins)
  • Dvořák Symphony No.6 in D major (45 mins)
  • Interval
  • Brahms Violin Concerto in D major (42 mins)

After a rather ordinary performance of Dvorak's Sixth Symhpony, Brahms's Violin Concerto was pure delight. Fischer's beautiful sound and excellent technique merged wonderfully with the orchestra. A performances to cherish and remember.

This was the most disappointing Prom concert I have heard this year. Dvorak's Symphony No.6 is a wonderful piece, one of his greatest works, but this conductor was completely out of sympathy with it. The momentum in the first movement was completely lost by frequent and completely exaggerated changes of speed. The orchestra seems to be a good one, but couldn't make a good impression this time.

Only just heard the concert, and I must say what a beautiful and sensitive performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto the soloist and orchestra gave. I was almost as impressed with the audience (who remained remarkably quiet during the long, emotive cadenza) as I was with Julia Fischer's wonderful and tender playing of her instrument. It's just a pity the same can't be said for the Dvorak 6, which sounded very lumpy and somewhat un-rehearsed. But that can be overlooked if the Brahms is an indicator of the orchestra's true ability.

Brilliant! The orchestra should also be praised, a fine performance all evening. What a way to celebrate your 30th wedding anniversary. Thoroughly enjoyed and entertained with first class playing. Thank you.

I thought Julia Fischer's stage performance was absolutely superb!

Dvorak 6 is usually a favourite piece of mine, but it wasn't on this occasion, with Yakov Kreizberg pulling the tempo around in that exaggerated way. Full marks to the NPO for keeping up with him, but they shouldn't have had to.
