In his first Proms appearance as Music Director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Riccardo Chailly conducts Viviane Hagner in Beethoven's lyrical Violin Concerto. Brahms's final symphonic achievement features a homage to Bach in its last movement. Continuing our Shakespeare theme, the concert opens with Beethoven’s dramatic overture for a contemporary staging of the Coriolanus myth that had inspired Shakespeare's final tragedy 200 years earlier.
