Music:  Haydn The Seasons
Artists:  Sally Matthews soprano James Gilchrist tenor Jonathan Lemalu bass-baritone Handel and Haydn Society of Boston Sir Roger Norrington conductor

Sir Roger Norrington

What the papers said:

The performance fielded two first-rate soloists in the tenor James Gilchrist and soprano Sally Matthews; the bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu was perhaps not so crystal clear either in enunciation or in tone, but the drama, the tenderness, the high spirits and the reflectiveness of Haydn’s great paean to the changing year were painted in scenes of striking imagination.
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

There was a delectable lightness about the textures, much well-pointed atmospheric detail, and some excellent solo work. James Gilchrist was outstandingly vivid in the tenor role; Sally Matthews produced some sensuous soprano tone, and Jonathan Lemalu was suitably solemn in the frosty scenes, if a bit dour elsewhere.
THE TIMES

One of Norrington's great qualities as a purveyor of period style in music is his flavoursome response to all aspects of rhythm, accent and colour to convey character. His almost disconcerting animation on the platform is all part of an eagerness to illuminate, intensify and share. Try this – he seems to be saying – taste the difference.

I think Alexandra Wilson sounds as though she's talking to 90-year-olds in an old people's home (just as Penny Gore sounds as though she's talking to a primary school class); and Alexandra Wilson said something absolutely wrong at the end of The Seasons - that now the whole cycle of the seasons starts over again. That couldn't be more wrong, because the oratorio ends with death - and then resurrection, a new and fuller life; and that perfectly represents both Haydn's faith and the faith of many of the 'ideal peasants' who have been presented. A telling mistake for a 21st century announcer!

Peter Crosland
Sheer bliss - always a Haydn fan, I seem to have missed the complete version of this. Did anyone else think that this was the work of a grateful old man showing all that he had been able to achieve, nod a tribute at what others had done and in a spooky way, give a hint of what was to come as well? You have no right to expect Haydn to write Schubert lieder or Gilbert and Sullivan choruses, but he came very close to doing both in this. If it isn't an Oratario, I am sure it is a very sincere thank-you note.

Bach's bestGreat work, though not quite a match for 'Creation'. Shame he couldn't complete the trilogy, that would have been wonderful

Paul Barnett
Hard to review this since the streamed version doesn't start until well after the performance has begun.

Editor's Note
This has now been fixed. Many apologies for the late start. Go to the Proms 'listen' page to hear the entire concert.

We were at the Royal Albert Hall. A fantastic evening. We watched the 1am (01:15) BBC4 TV transmission on getting home. The TV gave no impression of the beautiful sound reaching out in the hall itself. And I think the close-ups of the 3 excellent soloists were "cruel" and detracted from the beautiful music being heard by us the live audience. We recorded the radio version from Radio 3 and this gives an idea of what we heard. Don't know why there were so many close-ups of the singers on the TV.

A life enhancing couple of hours.

Is it just me (or perhaps our wonderfully idiosyncratic Albert Hall) or was the Chorus woefully under-strength for such a big piece? They made an excellent sound, but during the thunder and lightning there was just ... well ... a brief shower. The soloists were excellent but I'm not sure I approve of Norrington's show-boating. We'll clap when we want to Sir Rog, not when you insist we should.

Wonderful. Sally Matthews shone again. So expressive and has such feeling for her role.
