Sir John Eliot Gardiner

What the papers said:

Cultures coalesced brilliantly last night when Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists met the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble from South Africa in performances of Rameau that had unrivalled zest.
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

When Campra is in austere mood, his harmonies and plaintive scoring, as in the oboe accompaniment to the counter-tenor in the Gradual, have affecting gravity. Anders Dahlin and Nicholas Mulroy sang their solos with great beauty.
THE GUARDIAN

Though Gardiner's Messe de Requiem was Brucknerian in its tempi and dynamics, it showed a peerless command of the acoustics. If the price of fastidiousness is a lack of sensuality, the rewards were sumptuous: rapt strings, rosy flutes, a matchless oboe solo from Michael Niesemann, grave kettle-drums, and a pungent bass-line of theorbo, gamba, cellos, basses, and bassoons.

Bach's best, the BBC has broken its normal rule of dross first, genius second. The Campra deserves to be better known. Liked the choir, too, but they were too good to waste on Rameau

Pllleeeaassseee get this incredible concert on DVD and make it snappy...!

Joe Stirling
Please advise me of any DVDs if/when available of 2007 proms

Patrick
Simply outstanding and a delight to watch. One hopes that this will be re-produced as a CD and DVD.

Nick Wharton
I had the pleasure of being at this prom. I was therefore unable to watch it on TV, but would love to see it again. Please can it be made available as a DVD?

John Hazlehurst (82)
Pure joy, delight, inspiration, revelation, gratitude, glad to be alive. The DVD is a must. Easily the finest of many fine musical treats. Worth a lifetime's licence fee!

As a long standing Rameau lover, I'm thrilled to read that so many enjoyed his music in this Prom, but I have to agree with Evelyn Nallen about the French dance group; it was heartbreaking to hear the audience laughing out loud at their antics during that heavenly piece from "Les Boréades" - poor Rameau deserved better than that!

Jane Reid
Pure joy from start to finish but so sorry that you had run out of programmes.

Teresita Alaniz & Gustavo Tomas
We enjoy your Proms in Argentina. Thank you very much, wonderful programmes.

Bernard Cooley
You complain about not being able to see it. I was thrilled just to hear it. Try living in a cultural dump like my country.....Australia. Still, in 1963 at the Proms I did see Birgit Nilson in Act 3 Gotterdamerung, and in 1964 a 26 year old Pavorotti in Idomeneo. That Campra requiem is just exquisite. My 3rd listening.

Jacqui
I agree with the person who said it was frustrating - like eavesdropping from the top of the stair. Even on the radio you could hear how exhilarating the performance was. Please show this on TV - or at least have it available on DVD. Please could you send us all info on where and when it might be available.

Editor's Note: This Prom was broadcast on BBC Four. Please see the Proms television schedule

On a hot, humid afternoon in Florida, USA what a joy to hear this glorious, wonderful music. It certainly brings me back, at least in memory, of my past visit to the Proms!! I certainly hope, as a now retired music teacher, one day I will be able once again to attend!! What a GREAT experience, both in attending and listening. Bravo to ALL the great musicians and everyone involved in bringing the Proms to life each year!

Kernow
What joy this prom brought me! Please play it again soon!

Jill, Wareham
Totally agree with Matt. Please make this concert available on DVD or repeat it. The dancing was brilliant.

Christine Corben, Dorset
Having only recently been able to watch BBC4 I was amazed to come upon this wonderful event. The people standing in the front of the stage blocked some of the view unfortunately. Having the wonderful dancing was a bonus and such fun. Could BBC4 please have more dance programmes, not Swan Lake etc. but more contemporary.

Evelyn Nallen
Eliot Gardiner directed the orchestra and singers wonderfully well and it was a rare treat to hear Rameau at the Proms. However, I am completely at odds with all the reviews I have read regarding the dancing. The French group were not amusing, authentic, original or enhancing to the music; the embarrassing coat-hanger routine during one of Rameau’s most exquisitely beautiful dances would surely have him spinning in his grave.

Pete Bungay
Tremendous! As a self confessed philistine who has little time for classical music or dance I would just like to thank everyone involved in this production for opening my eyes to the sheer beauty and magic of Rameau and the inventivenes, wit and charm of Compagnie Roussat-Lubek. Complete joy.

Steve Abel
A wonderful, fantastic evening which proved that Baroque rocks! A Prom to remember.I agree with the reviewers in hoping that the BBC will repeat the broadcast on TV or better still, make it available on DVD. Many thanks to all who made this concert such a memmorable evening.

Pampollin
Note to David - that instrument was a theorbo, I think.

D P Hassell
Absolutely brilliant, just what classical music should be, educating, enlightening and involving. This was multicultural sharing at it's best. Well done to everyone. A note to Polly - don't you have TV?

Matt Holt
Please, please, please make this concert available on DVD. Or at the very least repeat it on TV again soon! There's not much point in listening to it on the radio as half the fun came from the dancing and spectacle of the staging. Utterly brilliant.

Pat
I so want to echo everyone else's comments! A wonderful evening, and not in the way one would expect from the words "French Baroque". Such joy, such life, such professionalism and artistry.EXCEPT the digital notes were across the bottom of the TV screen where all the action was. Doesn't anyone think about this? (I will forgive the temporary appearance of the Cbeebies smiley across the Requiem: think of it as an omen of the smiles to come).

PLEASE can it be repeated on a wider-access channel?

Sunday evening's concert of music by Campra and Rameau was totally exhilarating, tinged with some frustration. It was absolutely like being the child at the top of the stairs eavesdropping on a fantastic party downstairs, and feeling thrilled to be there, but utterly left out. This is no criticism, because the Proms are all about the live audience, and we are privileged to be included every evening via Radio 3. But I so badly wanted to be able to SEE what was going on! It must have been very spectacular with the mix and variety of musicians and dancers, and obviously gave so much pleasure to the audience, who applauded and laughed with huge enjoyment and enthusiasm.

What wonderful programming to include the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble and their dancers, and Compagnie Roussat-Lubek I heard a little about the concert beforehand and so guessed there was a South African gumboot dance included - I am familiar with this from a folk group performing it at folk festivals in this country. But I'm afraid I could only picture the kilt and gumboots worn by one of the Old Rope String Band - and I'm sure the dancers on stage looked far more exotic! Nicholas Kenyon and Sir John Eliot Gardiner planned and delivered an absolute gem of an evening on Sunday - I'm still dancing in my head, and it was one of those evenings when you turm off the radio with a sigh of utter contentment. Thank you all.

David Jones
I enjoyed the evening very much but it was to some extent spoiled by camera work not being up to the usual high BBC standards poor views of players and instruments - I believe there were a number of unusual instruments - a lute or something like - never seen once in closeup. And my wife is very disappointed that the comments are not available in subtitles.

Francis Flanagan
I really enjoyed last night. Great singing, playing and dancing. I think after that performance the choir should be renamed the monteverdi choral soloists. Well sung the top tenor. I must take issue with charles hazzlewood on TV, with the comment that South Africa is the top musical country in the world. What about Italy? then there are Germany and France? I liked his shirt though. Regards

Christine Kirkby
A total delight! I cannot imagine a more uplifting and life enhancing musical experience. Thank you.

John Anstee, Nanteuil-en- Vallee, France
Watching this concert in France made me want to rush round to all our French friends and say 'Come and watch this now'. It was a wonderful concert, or rather a celebration of music and its potential to bring people of all ages and races together. The programme of French music was very well chosen. Campra is hardly a familiar name but we heard a vividly realised interpretation of his Mass which brought out the drama and devotion of the piece implicit in the original orchestration and variety of vocal textures. Gardiner presided benevolently in the knowledge that his experienced forces were thoroughly rehearsed and totally sympathetic to this moving work. Throughout the evening the soloists from within the choir sang superbly and used their dramatic skills to effect throughout the evening.

After the interval the combination of the theatrical music of Rameau and the poised and wittily choreographed dancing of the Paris-based dancers was a feast. This recipe would have provided a gourmet meal in itself, but there was more. Rosemary Nalden is clearly a driven woman and her arrival with the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble added another enticing course to the menu. Whether playing on their own or within the ranks of the English Baroque Soloists, the young peoples' precision and enjoyment of Rameau's music was overwhelming. Furthermore, the dancers among the Ensemble's own ranks provided a perfect counterbalance to the French dancers wwith their powerful but fluid movement. At the end of a very full programme, the involvement of the whole body of performers drew in the audience who spontaneously beat time to the music. There were no incongruities. This transcontinental celebration of music was inspiring for viewers and performers alike and would have made a fitting conclusion to the Prom season. It is hard to imagine a better evening of music and I shall certainly be seeking the DVD if the BBC makes it available. My French neighbours have been alerted!

Adrian Pallant - Wirral
I found myself becoming increasingly engrossed in this wonderful, spectacular evening of music and dance. I knew that we were in for a treat with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his world-class musicians – but combined with the creativity, exuberance and humour of Dance for All and the Soweto String Ensemble, it was an unforgettable performance. As the final credits rolled, it was as if the momentum and joy would carry the ‘party’ on into the early hours! This and the opening night have provided us with a fantastic start to this Proms season – congratulations to all!

Margaret Williams
What a joy,all of it was wonderful, thank you very much to all concerned.
