Fish merchant Doug Rennie, or “Big Dougie” as he is known, is a larger than life personality. Fish processing has been a massive business in Aberdeen for many years but the processors are living through difficult times with frequent shortages of fish. Well known in the fishing industry, Doug is up at 4.30 every morning to drive to the fish market in Peterhead. We meet him in Series 1 Episode 4 of The Harbour making his daily commute to Peterhead to buy fish. Doug works for family firm Andrew Christie Junior in Aberdeen where employees from Eastern Europe are the core of the workforce. Over the next few months the business will move to a newly refurbished state-of-the-art factory across the river. Some of the staff are doubtful about the move, but Doug is brimming over with enthusiasm as he shows us round the ultra-modern premises which he believes is a role model for the fish processing industry.
