Caitlin McLean

Along with her brood, Caitlin McLean brings a whirlwind of chaos, humour and heart to Shieldinch. Shrewd and witty, she will do whatever it takes to protect her family.

Caitlin has never had it easy. A single mum to Jenny, Drew and Ruby, she never planned to have three children to three different fathers but she wouldn’t change them for the world. Not to mention she virtually raised her kid sister, Ellie. They don’t always see eye-to-eye, but, it’s true what they say, blood is thicker than water.

Caitlin seems fearless and feisty. She’s been blessed with the gift of the gab and the wits to help her lash out insults readily. Under the thickest of skin, she’s all too aware of her failings and too scared to apply for a job in case she’s rejected. So she lives off the state, but with Jenny gone, the benefit door is closing to her.

Keeping her family together is Caitlin’s obsession. She’s so proud of Jenny studying medicine down South, but feels her absence keenly. When she discovers that Drew’s been skiving off school to work as a skivvy for a local football team, she’s raging. Pete, Drew’s father, convinces her to let him follow his dream of being a professional footballer. Besides she knows Ruby still needs her.

To set an example to her youngest daughter, Caitlin gets a job at the pub and considers going back to college. On the romantic front, she’s fighting a growing attraction to Pete. He has hurt her in the past so she thinks long and hard before letting him back into her bed. He promises this time they’ll make it work, and she desperately wants to believe him.
