Thòisich Derek MacAoidh ag obair leis a' BhBC às dèidh dha Oilthigh Ghlaschu fhàgail ann an 1998. An toiseach ann an seòmar naidheachd BBC Radio nan Gàidheal ann an Inbhir Nis, chaidh Derek a dh'obair le sgioba Eòrpa ann an 1999. Lean e mar fhear-naidheachd air a' phrògram gu cunbhalach gu 2007, ag aithris à gach ceàrn dhen Roinn Eòrpa eadar Svalbard aig tuath agus Ciopras aig deas, à Innis Tìle mun iar gu Georgia mun ear.

Bhon uair sin, tha e air a bhith ag obair air grunn diofar phrògraman air BBC ALBA, ag aithris air spòrs, a' rannsachadh ann an eachdraidh agus a' ceasnachadh dhaoine mun bheatha aca fhèin. Chòrd e ris glan a ghuth a chur ri sàr phrògram mu Johnny Cash cuideachd! Tha e air tilleadh gu Eòrpa uair no dhà anns an ùine sin cuideachd, mar eisimpleir nuair a bha e ann an Kosovo an là a ghairm iad iad fhèin mar dhùthaich neo-eisimeileach.

Derek MacKay

On leaving Glasgow University in 1998, Derek Mackay joined BBC Radio nan Gàidheal's news team in Inverness. His first experience of Eòrpa came as a researcher in 1999, but appeared as a reporter on the programme regularly from 2000 until 2007. In that period, Derek covered a huge range of stories in every corner of Europe, from Iceland in the west to Georgia in the east - although he was perhaps more at home in the cold of Svalbard than the heat of Cyprus!

Since leaving Eòrpa, Derek has presented a wide range of programmes for BBC Alba and BBC Radio nan Gaidheal, including documentaries, chat shows and sports programmes, in addition to commentating regularly on football and rugby. He has occasionally returned to Eòrpa, too, such as when he visited Kosovo to report on their declaration of independence in 2008.
