In Episode 4 of the first series we meet Howard Drysdale, the relentlessly cheery harbour chaplain. He is a welcome visitor onto the ships in harbour and is there to help when any of the seafarers have problems or just to help make life easier for them with presents of woolly hats, books or simply a few kindly words. With a fund of corny jokes, the former merchant navy seaman has been port chaplain in Aberdeen for eleven years.
Howard has recently achieved the dream of a lifetime, raising enough money to open a seafarers’ centre at the harbour. With pool table, TV, and the internet it’s a welcoming haven for sailors who are far from home. Some of the seamen are away from home for months or even years, and Howard cares deeply about all of them. Howard is delighted at the opening of the new venture, but he is soon to be rocked by some very unwelcome news.
