The Rise of Islamism

Listen in pop-out player

Eyptian author Tarek Osman explores the rise of Islamism or political Islam. He investigates the many events from the 1970s onwards which converged to create a force that came to fill the vacuum left by Arab Nationalism.

In the third programme, Tarek examines the reasons for the re-emergence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and across the region, and the gradual cultural shift that changed the landscape of the Arab world. We find out how the influence of the conservative oil rich Gulf states like Saudi Arabia began to take hold in the Middle East and the three pivotal events in 1979 which boosted Islamism.
