Planets, Crystallography, Dementia

55 minutes
First broadcast:
Sunday 15 December 2013

Every year Earth and planetary scientists from all over the world meet up at the American Geophysical Union’s meeting in San Francisco. They discuss the latest research and discoveries about Earth and other planets. There is the latest news from NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. New measurements are about to guide the rover to start looking for signs of past life on the Red planet. Organic molecules could be signs of microbial life and scientists hope to guide the rover to possible sites where signs of life may be found.

A new 35-year study has confirmed that adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce a person’s risk of developing dementia. It is the first study to look at the effect of lifestyle on clinically diagnosed dementia and researchers at Cardiff University School of Medicine followed a large representative group of Welsh men for 35 years.

Self-healing Materials
Researchers are currently developing bacteria in concrete which, once awakened, excrete lime to fill any cracks. In South America you can choose a car paint that heals its own scratches. And, there are even gold atoms which can migrate to mend tiny breaks in jet turbine blades.
