Sport's greatest icons have been paying tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Muhammad Ali said: "His was a life filled with purpose and hope. Hope for himself, his country and the world. He made us realise we are our brother's keeper and that our brothers come in all colours".

Pele described the former South African President as "one of the most influential people in my life. He was my hero, my friend".

Nine time golf major champion and South African Gary Player is another sportsman who knew Mandela well.
