Was Anne Boleyn suspected of witchcraft?
Historians argue that the failure of Anne Boleyn to bear Henry a son was one of the reasons that led to her downfall. The miscarriage of her baby meant that she was accused of witchcraft and the act of adultery.
Hilary Mantel believes that this gave Henry the excuse he needed to try and annul their marriage, because by 1536 Henry cannot imagine what he saw in her. However, Philippa Gregory argues that Henry actually believed that this was proof that this was a punishment from God and that Anne Boleyn was actually a witch.
