Covering Mali, and an Afghan governor takes aim
Orla Guerin has been meeting a politician with some unusual skills. For Abdul Basir Salangi, the day starts on the treadmill, where he works out for an hour. In Afghanistan it pays to be fighting fit. And it pays to be a crack shot. The governor of Parwan Province fought off an assassination attempt 18 months ago, and he realises the next one could be just around the corner. But he is ready with his AK-47, and he’s determined to battle the Taliban.
Also on the programme, the journalistic circus rolls into Timbuktu, bringing lots of equipment, money, and a list of needs and wants. Among the lesser priorities – beer! Thomas Fessy has been covering the war in Mali, and he finds newly liberated people keen to hawk newly liberated stores of alcohol.
