How were the Sperrin Mountains formed?

The Sperrin Mountains are the remains of an ancient mountain range - the Caledonians - which stretched for thousands of miles. At one point the Sperrins peaks were much higher than today. Computer graphics show what the area might have looked like and also tracks the Caledonian range from the Appalachians to Scandinavia.
