Living with cold: mussel gathering
In Canada, on the coast of the Arctic Sea, lies Wakeham Bay. It is so cold here that in the winter the sea freezes over. In such an icy environment it is impossible to grow anything but the Inuit people are experts at sourcing food that is rich in minerals and vitamins – mussels. The mussels are to be found in a surprising location deep under the thick layer of sea ice. Like their forefathers before them, the Inuit people know how to reach the mussels by understanding the tides of the sea ice as a dangerous task.
