Hindu Durga festival in India

Hindu beliefs in the goddess Durga are explored through the sights, sounds and energy of the Durga festival in India. Presenter Reverend Peter Owen-Jones visits Calcutta/Kolkota for the nine day Durga Puja. He observes the fashioning of clay deities and the construction of street shrines depicting the victory of Durga over the demon Mahisha. The images are explained by a Hindu woman, emphasising the role of the female in Hinduism and the place of energy that sustains everything. The festivities conclude as 20,000 Durga murtis are dragged through the streets and cast into the waters of the river Ganges. The presenter reflects on Hindu belief in karma.
