A Catholic heir for James II

James II's wife gave birth to a son in the summer of 1688. William of Orange's wife Mary was no longer next in line to the throne because James's Catholic son would inherit his father's crown. Alarmed by the situation, some of James's Protestant opponents secretly invited William of Orange to invade England and oust his father-in-law.
