The changing role of women

World War II was a trigger for a sea-change in employment opportunities for women.

It wasn’t just the well-known women’s war organisations; women took jobs in munitions and aircraft factories, as well as civilian jobs left empty by men. The post war years brought women into the workforce and instigated a change in the whole of the Welsh economy.

Not everyone was happy about the new opportunities available to women. Older men were not happy that their daughters were coming home saying ‘you know, I‘ve earned so much this week’. The scene was set for a revolutionary shift in attitudes over the next few decades.
