He has released 17 albums and played to millions of fans around the world.

But he started life as a fisherman's son in a small town.

Baaba Maal uses his concert appearances to talk about the issues that matter to him, including health and education.

His latest campaign focusses on the food crisis in Mauritania which is affecting an estimated 700,000 people.
