Glora Estefan on the ' 'Goddess of Mexican music'
Chavela Vargas is a legendary Costa-Rican born woman, who went to Mexico in search of musical freedom. Gloria explains how Chavela didn't start singing until she was 30 and carried on into her 80s. Like Gloria, she has an deep alto singing voice, which is rare in female singers and hence makes them both stand out. Chavela has also led a wild, raunchy life which is reflected in the tone of her voice, as Gloria points out that you can almost hear the cigars and alcohol when she sings.
