Polly met the Doctor through her job at the Post Office Tower where she worked as a secretary for Professor Brett. ‘Polly is pretty smart, a cracking typist…’ Brett told the Doctor, before adding, ‘Also rather a cheeky one at times!’ The Time Lord warmed to her immediately and she struck up a swift rapport with Dodo, one of his companions, little knowing that the friendship would change the course of her life…

Polly was popular, charismatic and by her own admission, had a knack of being able to cheer people up. ‘Any time you want a bit of brightness in your lives,’ she once said, ‘Come to Pol!’ It’s easy to see why – she was kind-hearted, blessed with a breezy sense of humour and didn’t take herself too seriously, pulling faces or telling jokes to keep others amused.
Her first adventure with the Doctor involved a victory over the deadly WOTAN. At the end of the battle she sought him out to let him know that Dodo had elected to remain on Earth. She saw the white-haired figure enter what appeared to be a police box and intending to return a key to the Doctor, followed him inside. Moments later she was whizzing through the vastness of time and space! She was good friends with Ben Jackson, the sailor who accompanied her into the TARDIS and the two traveling humans often supported each other during their escapades with the Doctor.
After a trip to seventeenth century Cornwall and an uncomfortably close encounter with the Cybermen, Polly had to cope with the newly regenerated Doctor. Unlike Ben, she immediately took to his new persona and was able to take his massive change in her stride. With the Second Doctor she faced Daleks, Cybermen on the moon, the Macra and other monsters before finally making it back to London, 1966.
