Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Professor George Carstairs, contemplates the patterns of social anthropology in his Reith series 'This Island Now'.

In this lecture entitled 'The First Years', Professor Carstairs considers the link between childhood experiences and adult neuroses to understand the structure of adult personality. He analyses how formative the first years of infancy can be, and explores how the relationships that we have as babies are reflected later on in life in our individual character.
