Synopsis

The Gulen Movement has been described as “arguably the most successful Islamic Movement in the world” – it has millions of supporters in Turkey, and runs schools in over a hundred countries. It has close contacts in the ruling Turkish AK Party, it owns a major media group and is the driving force behind one of Turkey’s biggest business federations. Yet no one outside the Movement really seems to know how it works, and its critics say it’s infiltrated the police and the judiciary, and that anyone who asks awkward questions winds up in gaol. Edward Stourton reports from Istanbul.
