The ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Delphi, a place where an entranced priestess called the Pythia was said to predict the future, has been found by modern geologists to sit above two fault lines that give off noxious gases. It may be that the Pythia drank water laced with these gases to send herself into a trance.
