From Ellington to the Wizard of Oz
Duke Ellington, recorded by Norman Granz in a museum and a lovely version of a song from the film the Wizard of Oz. It was originally sung by Judy Garland and the scarecrow, but this version is by Nnenna Freelon with help from an audience at the Kennedy Centre. Add to this music by the Sioux City 7 which was a small group out of the New Paul Whiteman Orchestra and the small group only existed for one radio show in the UK. There’s a track from a newly issued album by Bobby Wellins and another new one with a star studded cast of musicians headed up by Ken Peplowski, Alan Barnes and Robert Fowler. We have some Ernie Andrews as requested by a listener and there are a couple of examples of bass playing singers . . . or are we talking about singing bass players – including, of course, Slam Stewart.
