Why have you, the BBC, censored the word 'Palestine' at 2:58 ?
Complain about this comment
Good question Lukeosite!! Dare say the BBC won't answer that one. Anything to say BBC?
Complain about this comment
Careful Lukeosite, better say P*******e or you might get censored too. It's Mark Thompson's least favourite swearword.

Why on earth is the word 'Palestine' censored? 'Palestine' is a place where thousands and thousands of people live, forced to live in below average and inhumane conditions at the hands of the Israelis! I think if is disgusting how you the 'bbc' have censored the word Palestine out like it is an offensive term!
Absolutely disgusted!

Not content with banning an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee for humanitarian relief in Gaza, the wretched bureaucrats at the BBC have now decided that the very mention of Palestine in a song is unacceptable. The BBC deserves ridicule and contempt for this.
Complain about this comment
Makes no sense. Palestine is recognised by most of the world. Has been represented in the Olympics. Our politicians and governmental bodies talk and work with Palestinian bodies. If we start to ban the names of places where does that lead us?

As nasher writes: anything to say BBC? It looks as if you message is 'don't free Palestine'. So, you are against democracy? Shameful hypocrisy.

I am outraged at this BBC censorship of the word 'Palestine'! It is ironic that you ask us not to write 'racist' comments on here, when the BBC itself has displayed blatant racism in censoring the word 'Palestine' from Mic Righteous's song. Since when is the word Israel banned? It is unfair to ban 'Palestine'.
Complain about this comment
Disgraceful and appalling censorship. So what happens if they play Desmond Dekker's "Israelites" track? Blatant BBC bias against Palestinians - yet again. Death in the Med...etc. This has to stop.

I can't believe an institution like BBC, who is run by us, the tax payers, has to edit out the word Palestine. Where are we heading to? Not sure what is there to be edited. Is it a "newswear word"?

no reason to censor it but sure they will come up with some twisted rubbish to justify this behaviour which everyone with half a brain or more will see it for what it is

Can you please explain what is wrong with the singer saying 'Free Palestine' on radio???
And please do not lecture me about BBC not taking sides, because this is textbook censorship which is at the core of preventing FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
The opinion of the singer (not the BBC!) to support the state of Palestine, which in a few months, would be recognised by the UN, is not insulting to any listener and I believe it is no different that any opinion represented on any program of the BBC.
The BBC giving in to the pressure of political lobbies, makes the BBC no different than any censoring state media in a totalitarian third world country.
Shame on you BBC journalists and employees to accept this censorship!

Is the word ‘ Palestine ’ controversial only when used in songs, or will the BBC be deleting it from all its programming?
Is the word ‘ Israel ’ similarly controversial?

I now find myself extremely offended by the initials "BBC". If they want to censor words which viewers genuinely find offensive then they should start by removing all occurrences of these initials from their websites and programming.

As far as I can tell, there have been no replies by the **C themselves as to why they censored the word 'Palestine'.
Do they hope it will just go away?
Complain about this comment
The BBC's explanation for this censorship is its "responsibility to be impartial when dealing with controversial subjects". But UK policy states that the settlements are illegal; Cameron himself says Gaza is a prison camp; the occupation is illegal under international law. So what's so controversial about saying the same thing in a rap song? This performance did not represent a "political viewpoint" but international law. There is no need for the BBC to worry about breaching its impartiality; the song did not represent a pro-Palestinian sentiment but a pro-international law sentiment. A pro-justice sentiment. The BBC has actually achieved bias, not impartiality, by showing that it questions international way. To be truly impartial the BBC should echo international law, should it not?
Complain about this comment
Is the word ‘ Palestine ’ controversial only when used in songs, or will the BBC be deleting it from all its programming?
Is the word ‘ Israel ’ similarly controversial?
How does the BBC decide what is a controversial subject? Which other news subjects does it deem to be controversial and worthy of BBC edits?
As a news organisation, how can the BBC report on news when it feels it has to censor ‘controversial subjects’ in order to maintain impartiality? All political news, by its nature, is controversial and excites a range of viewpoints – there is no consensus on anything political. Why is the BBC making this decision only over Palestine ? This in itself reveals the partiality of the BBC.

FREE PALESTINE...FREE PALESTINE...FREE PALESTINE...FREE PALESTINE...NOW!!!
This is unbelievable!
Even coming from the same BBC who banned an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee for humanitarian relief to Gaza, the same outfit who aired the disgraceful Panorama programme on the Gaza Aid Flotilla.
Despite all the evidence we already have of their bias towards Israel and against the beseiged Palestinians, this Orwellian censorship against a comment that has support in International law, is still remarkable.
I agree with john (comment 24) - how is this any different from the Free Nelson Mandela slogan and campaign?? Nelson Mandela himself has said something like 'we cannot be free until Palestine is free'.
As the BBC are not seeing fit to respond to these comments, I will be writing to my MP to press for an explanation. I would urge others to do the same.

Why does the BBC insist of blindfolding itself to what the entire world knows: the Palestinians live under an iilegal and oppressive military occupation and have the right to live freely just like any other nation. The BBC will be forced to wake up to this fact just like it was forced to wake up to Apartheid South Africa 30 years ago. But it will be too damn late by then!

I wonder if Mic Righteous had said "don't free Palestine" if that would have been censored. It seems that the BBC is censoring anything which questions the status quo ie Israels illegal military occupation. The BBC has an absolute right to censor any material or information which may contrevene the BBCs publicised censorship rules. Sadly on this occasion the BBC has identified a zionist sympathiser working within the Censorship department. This person has been spoken to about impartiality and objectivity. This individual will be given additional training (they will read the UN Gaza Inquiry by Judge Goldstone) and will be monitored to ensure their application of the bbc's censorship rules is fair and objective.

What hope of peace is there for the Middle East when Britain's main news broadcaster and one of the biggest in the world - BBC, deems it justified that the words that are needed to achieve peace, 'Free' and 'Palestine', can't be sung together? How sad and annoying that the only corporation funded by the British people, the BBC decides by itself to censor singing about what the people of Palestine most need to achieve social justice for them, 'freedom'. Perhaps auntie doesn't know that since Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories started over 4 decades ago, they have implemented an apartheid and racist system of administration of the territories, violating countless international laws? Surely the BBC is unaware that according to the words of United Nations Rapporteur on Human Rights, John Dugard, "Gaza is a prison and Israel seems to have thrown away the key" freedom of Palestine is a vital ingredient in any hope for peace.

With their pitiful excuses the BBC have once again confirmed their ridiculous belief in the "nirvana of neutrality". Does anyone other than themselves still believe this nonsense?
Good journalism does not submit at every opportunity to the will of the powerful. Yet time after time the BBC blatantly broadcast propaganda and approved narratives while unashamedly declaring themselves as a beacon of impartiality.
It has become nothing more than a bad joke. Once the licence fee payer would grin uncomfortably. Now nobody's laughing.

I find it very disgraceful that you have censored the word "Palestine". There is absolutely no justification and you have accomplished nothing but revealing the BBC's impartial and biased nature (that is - revealing it to people who were not aware of it, as many of us were already aware). You should be ashamed of yourselves, and also should try to educate yourselves. Palestine is a geographical area, and is referred to by MPs and even the Prime Minister. Is it because he said "Free Palestine"? What happened to freedom of speech; do not forget that the BBC enterprise is maintained by taxpayers' money, so try to represent the people's view and not simply your own biased one.

Posting to the BBC, it's moderators, editors, other gagged media .... etc. Freedom of speach is not only gagged in other parts of the world, which you may refer to as third world countries any more. In fact the first and second world media practice some thing even more sinister; gagging the truth.
In order to stabilize the other wise dislocated human relations and peace in the world we live in, it is essential to uphold the truth. No matter how painful it is, the truth shall be the only path to stable and just peace.
Wheter the BBC or any other organisation or entity denies the existence of the word Palestine, it will never vacate the concience and hearts of Billions of people.
But the question remains and awaits urgent answers; Why does the BBC deny the Palestinians the right to be heared on their programs? Unless the BBC is either controlled by Zionists or subscribes to gagging freedom of speach and truth.

How ironic that I was warned of offensive language before viewing the video. It seems nothing is as offensive as the world "Palestine" to the BBC because that word was censored. How ludicrously biased can the BBC get? And the other day, after Nakba commemorators approached the Israeli borders and were shot at, John Humphries on BBC Radio4 asked the Palestinian interviewee what HE would do if somebody came into his house. Not the slightest sense of irony or history in his question. Why is the word Palestine censored? What is the BBC afraid of?

BBC you need to relearn what impartiality means. It does not mean not giving offence to the Israel Lobby. It does not mean censoring content that is not approved by all.
