Working on an active volcano
By far the most dangerous shoot the Human Planet Mountains team tackled was working on an active volcano. On the Indonesian island of Java, men mine sulphur from inside Ijen Volcano. This crater is filled with a mix of highly toxic gases, that have claimed the lives of over 70 miners in the last 40 years. In the story we wanted to show the extraordinary toughness of mountain people who work here, but filming this wasn’t easy and the crew ran into their own problems.
