Berlioz: Harold en Italie

45 minutes
First broadcast:
Sunday 21 April 2002

When it came to writing symphonies, few were more adventurous and unorthodox as Hector Berlioz. Harold en Italie - inspired by the poetry of Lord Byron - was certainly no exception. Chris de Souza explores this unusual work with the help of musical examples specially recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Steve Bernard (viola), Nicholas Kok (conductor).
