International popularity came when he was attacked on stage while performing at the Manchester Comedy Store. At one time he even incorporated the incident into his act.
He is now a recognisable name in the USA after his solo debut one hour special on HBO.
Jim has performed at numerous festivals, including the Edinburgh Fringe, Montreal Comedy Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals and the Glastonbury Festival.
He has appeared on BBC television shows such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, The Heaven and Earth Show and 8 out of 10 Cats. He has also performed spots on The World Stands Up, Comedy Blue and Edinburgh and Beyond for the Paramount Comedy Channel. He has also been featured on various programmes, including BBC Radio 5 Live's U.K.-based Saturday morning sports show, Fighting Talk. He recently relocated from his eight-year home in England to the Venice Beach section of Los Angeles, CA.

He was born in Suffolk. After completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Exeter, experimenting with animation, he spent some time working as an illustrator and DJ before joining Aardman Animations in the early eighties.
During his first nine year stretch at Aardman he worked on several short films and promos including Morph, Sledgehammer for Peter Gabriel, Pee Wee's Playhouse in New York, his own film Ident (1989) and two Rex the Runt pilot films.
