Southouse takes his wife's shoes to be repaired so he can talk to the cobbler, David Jasker who has accused a man, Captain Jones, of sodomy. Garrow and Southouse visit Jones at Newgate and discover that he is being blackmailed.
Southouse warns Garrow and Lady Sarah that that they must not be seen in public together. Sir Arthur embraces Farmer's suggestion that he can contrive a situation so that Garrow and Lady Sarah are discovered together.
At her hotel, Lady Sarah unwittingly opens the door to a visitor revealing Garrow in the room with her.
