Stephen Frears is the award-wining director of commercial films such as The Queen, The Grifters and Dangerous Liaisons. His latest is Tamara Drewe, starring ex-James Bond girl Gemma Arterton and adapted from a cult comic strip. This is a very English story set in the countryside amongst the so called middle classes. Stephen Frears talks to Anna about the making of the film, Raymond Chandler and delivering milk…

We look at the career of French film director, Alain Corneau whose death has been announced. Probably best known to international audiences for his 1991 film "Tous Les Matins Du Monde", which won 7 Cesars, his latest film "Love Crime" has just opened.

Iraqi cultural centre in Washington DC

The Iraqi Embassy has opened a Cultural Centre in Washington DC. It's housed in an office building in the middle of the city where it's become a hub of cultural activities. Aimed at drawing attention to Iraq's rich history, it also has a mission of winning the hearts and minds of Americans. The Strand's Jane O'Brien went along to one of the centre's first events.

Adeniyi "Niyi" Olagunju

Project 50 (17 Nations), 2010

Using recycled pallets, painted in vibrant colours, Niyi Olagunju's works look something like 3D Mondrians. But scratch the surface and the work is very African and, when not directly lifted from specific national flags, is attributable to the artist's Nigerian cultural background - rich in a diverse and vibrant tradition of textile making. Anna meets the artist at a new exhibition of his work.
