Wednesday 14th July – Saturday 14th AugustWORLD PREMIERE of a new adaptation commissioned by the Theatre Royal Bath.

“exquisitely staged… excellent cast – FOUR STARS” Mail on Sunday

“an impeccable cast, without weak link … a hugely successful adaptation and an entirely captivating production, well-crafted and beautifully staged” British Theatre Guide

“This is the saddest story I have ever heard…”

So begins Ford Madox Ford’s great masterpiece about the disintegration of two marriages. John Dowell, looks back over a seemingly perfect time just before the outbreak of the First World War, when he and his wife befriended a British couple. They holiday together, basking in the kind of golden existence that wealth and privilege bestows. Edward is a wonderful friend, an upright citizen, a good soldier. Beneath the harmonious exterior, however, things are far from what they seem. As John Dowell – and the audience – discover the truth, a whole world collapses…

The Theatre Royal Bath has specially commissioned this stage adaptation by the award-winning playwright and screenwriter Julian Mitchell, whose work includes ‘Another Country’ and the films ‘Wilde’ and ‘Vincent & Theo’. Ford Madox Ford was a novelist and critic who had a major impact on early 20th-century English literature, championing Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Jean Rhys, WB Yeats and DH Lawrence. The Good Soldier was described by Graham Greene as ‘probably one of the finest novels of our century’.

We are at the Taunton Flower Show today to bring you a flavour of this fabulous Somerset event.

Taunton Flower Show is held in Vivary Park in Taunton. The centre piece of the show are the large competitive classes and floral classes marquees.

The competitive classes are open to all and consist of approximately 250 different classes for amateur gardeners, crafters, floral artists and children. The floral marquee features traders who mount show displays of their flowers and plants. Around the marquees are a wide range of horticultural traders.

The centre of the park is an arena where events such as marching bands, dog displays, dramatic motor bike events etc take place. The show also features other smaller marquees - we have a bees and honey show and in 2009 we are also having a wine show.
