Duration: 2 hours, 50 minutes

The thirty third annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion in Dublin, Ireland.

Celine Dion, who was then only famous in the French speaking world, was set on the path to worldwide stardom after her victory for Switzerland performing "Ne partez pas sans moi" which beat the United Kingdom's entry by one point.

The contest was an elaborate affair, with organisers attempting to bring in a younger audience with the biggest Eurovision stage ever seen at that point and giant screens around the room.

To add to the youth appeal, the interval act on this occasion was the 'Celtic Rock' group Hothouse Flowers, performing their single "Don't Go".
