Synopsis
For almost a hundred years, law enforcement agencies have been using the polygraph to find out whether suspects are lying or not.
In this edition of Discovery, Roland Pease looks into the science of deception and the eternal quest for an objective means of spotting deception.
Is the polygraph simply a bad way of seeing if someone is stressed and sweating, or justifiably the lead tool for catching spies? The BBC hears from exponents on either side of the debate.
