Long grass can become very dry and that makes it vulnerable to one of nature’s most powerful forces, fire. Thousands of tonnes of dry grass is enough to fuel a blazing inferno. Migrating sand martins brave the smoke to take advantage of the tiny insects that flee the flames. This feast is a welcome windfall to a bird on a thousand mile journey from Africa to Europe
