Yoiking
Andre Somby and his son Lawra are Yoikkers - that is they sing the traditional songs of the Saami people of northern Scandinavia in the countries of Norway, Sweden Finland and also the Kola peninsula of Russia. The Saami people almost lost their culture in the twentieth century as their very different attitude to what is called 'progress' marginalised them. Their language was not taught in schools, their songs disappeared. But now the Yoik is being performed at the Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver that is running alongside the Winter Olympics. This is a major triumph of survival for a small community most of us have never heard of.

Charlotte Gainsbourg
Charlotte Gainsbourg is an award winning actress, the daughter of famously artistic parents and she's just released her third album. IRM - renowned as one of rock's more daring and experimental figures - it deals with her recent experiences following a brain haemorrhage and emergency surgery. And it's wonderful. She talks to Mark about mixing music and her film commitments and how she came to enjoy the sounds of the MRI scanner that saved her life.

Laila Lalami
When the Moroccan blogger and writer Laila Lalami set out to write her first novel she was determined it would not be about camels, sand or women in veils. The Secret Son turns out to be about poverty, political corruption and a young man's search for identity in North Africa. She talks to Mark Coles about the real Casablanca and the fantasy soundtrack to her book.

Death of the recording studio
The world famous Abbey Road studios in London are up for sale. Reports suggest the owners of the studio EMI want to raise money to reduce its debts. But, as music critic David Hepworth reports, Abbey Road is just the latest in a long line of iconic studios falling victim to financial hardship and changes in recording technology.
