Series 11 Programme 5
Liam opens a Kist o Chunes with Dumfries singer, Emily Smith, performing her own song, ‘Go to Town’ from her CD ‘A Different Life’. At the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival this year, Liam met up with Jim Ferry, winner of the Ulster-Scots strand of the competition - this is ‘Mary McGee’.
This year is the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The Ulster-Scots Folk Orchestra have released a new CD to mark the anniversary: Willie Drennan performs a track called ‘Thiepval Graveyard’ written by Charlie Reynolds.
Liam talks about the impact of the TV series ‘The Beverley Hillbillies’ and we listen to the familiar theme song performed by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. The next track is by Penicuik schoolgirl, Siobhan Miller, singing ‘Aye Walkin-O’ by Robert Burns: and the final song in today’s kist is performed by ‘Deaf Shepherd’ and is called ‘Huntin the Buntin’ - about the yellowhammer.
