Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
We review the new biopic of the English singer Ian Dury. With his band the Blockheads, Dury had a string of hits during the late '70's and early '80s with songs such as Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, What a Waste and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. He cut a colour figure on the music scene of the time with his distinctive look, quirky lyrics and word play, explosive behaviour, and live shows which incorporated elements of vaudeville and music hall.
Jonathan Lethem's new book Chronic City has been hailed by the critics as "stunning" and "brilliant". On The Strand he discusses his story of an alternative reality Manhattan where a bizarre fog is engulfing Wall Street, a character is stranded aboard a Space Station and a Tiger is prowling the streets.
