Synopsis
The former Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, was hailed by George W Bush as a man of steel and a staunch defender of freedom.
His domestic opponents pilloried him with one leading political commentator calling him Australia's Richard Nixon.
He sent troops to war in Afghanistan and Iraq and said he wanted to see an Australia proud, not apologetic.
He looms large in his country's recent history but has Australia today left John Howard behind? He talks to Stephen Sackur.
