What is a musical legend? This week Charlie’s programme reveals a selection of artists who have achieved that status in their own country – and in some cases beyond those borders. From Argentina Atahualpa Yupanqui with an album recorded in France, a man and his guitar and a great tune. This is followed by a similarly sparse and dramatic track from a name that is much more famous now than it was when he was actually alive - 20th century troubadour Woody Guthrie, singing a classic song of defiance that was adopted by the folk movement of the 1960s; ‘This Land Is Your Land’. Even though he died in 1967 a brand new collection of recordings has just been found and released.

Then to Pakistan for the finest qawwali singer of all time; Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan singing a song that ignites and hypnotises with a human voice achieving spiritual power. And ending in Africa for two tracks; Ghana was home to E T Mensah, and Charlie’s choice should be instatntly familiar to fans of The Beach Boys! And Franco; whose band TPOK Jazz dominated Congolese music for more than 3 decades; their style influenced all African dance music that came after them.
