Stephen Bumfrey

Stephen mingles with the stars of stage and screen on his afternoon show.

The music lover took over the entertainment show in September 2009 - which starts at the very sociable time of midday - having spent nearly five years getting up ridiculously early to present BBC Radio Norfolk's breakfast programme.

Stephen's a local lad and has enjoyed an acclaimed broadcasting career, but he began his working life in the packing department at Matthes Bakery in his home town of Gorleston-on-Sea.

He soon decided that playing records was a better long-term career move and his first job in broadcasting was as a very nervous DJ on a pirate station in Italy back in 1980.

After a spell exploring the world, he returned home to Norfolk and decided to pop into the headquarters of BBC East (because it was raining) at All Saints Green.

He must have liked it as he stayed for eight happy years as a floor manager for BBC Look East, and then as a graphic designer and film sound mixer.

During this time he was also given his first big break on BBC Radio Norfolk: The C90 Cassette every Saturday evening. The next stop was BBC Essex to present the afternoon show.

In 1989 Stephen joined British Forces station BFBS, before jumping ship to Heart FM in the Midlands. After a short spell on commercial radio in London and the south coast, he decided it was time to head home to Norfolk.

Now he can be heard on weekdays 12 midday until 4pm, and Sundays 1pm to 4pm.
