Synopsis

Africa's elephant population is threatened by a new upsurge in ivory poaching in many parts of the continent. In the second part of this series on the illegal trade in African ivory, Andrew Luck-Baker looks at the various factors behind a mounting crisis for the species' future – economic hardship in Africa, more people in East Asia having the money to buy ivory goods, and ever greater conflict between people and wildlife over water, food and space.

Kenya Wildlife Service got to these tusks before the ivory thieves in Tsavo West National Park.
