Synopsis

In North America a tiny insect is munching its way from west to east.

The mountain pine beetle has already devastated parts of British Columbia’s extensive pine forests, and threatens to make its way as far as New Jersey in the USA.

Julian Siddle looks at why beetle numbers have reached epidemic proportions, how the outbreak is affecting the timber industry in Canada and what measures are being taken to try to halt the spread.
